The 2010 leading lady of professional rodeo is Kelli Jackson of Eupora, Miss. She is the first Miss Rodeo Mississippi to achieve the title of Miss Rodeo America and was crowned at the 55th Annual Miss Rodeo America Pageant held in Las Vegas.
During 2010, she will travel more than 100,000 miles representing Miss Rodeo America, Inc. and the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.
I am an enthusiastic rodeo fan and spirited competitor; the sport of rodeo encompasses not only my dreams, but also my passion. As Miss Rodeo America, I will offer a welcoming glimpse of the Western lifestyle and the sport of rodeo to our nation, Kelli said.
Aside from her rodeo interests, Kelli has a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Political Science from Wheaton College. Her goal is to obtain a Masters degree in Public Policy with an agricultural development focus from Duke University, a law degree from Georgetown and eventually work for the United States Department of Agriculture.
Winning the title of Miss Rodeo America and the categories of appearance, speech and personality at the pageant, Kelli will receive more than $10,000 in scholarships upon completion of her reign to achieve her educational goals.
Contestants are judged in the major categories of horsemanship, personality, and appearance, competing in the areas of public speaking, personal interviews, modeling, photogenic and rodeo/equine knowledge.
Miss Rodeo America Inc. Miss Rodeo Mississippi
For Mississippi cowgirl Katie Jo Vanderslice, a five year olds dream became reality when she was crowned Miss Rodeo Mississippi 2010. An all American girl standing 5'8" with auburn hair and green eyes, Katie Jo is the 36th Mississippi woman to wear the coveted crown of Miss Rodeo Mississippi.
Katie Jo is the daughter of George and Karen Vanderslice of Pachuta, Mississippi, and has one younger brother, Tom. As the official spokesperson for professional rodeo in Mississippi, Katie Jo will spend her year traveling across the state as well as the country promoting rodeo to everyone that she meets. Her year long reign will culminate with a week-long competition in Las Vegas, Nevada, this December, as she vies for the title of Miss Rodeo America 2011.
Katie Jo is currently a senior at Mississippi State University, majoring in Poultry Science. After completion of her degree, Katie Jo would like to give back to her community by becoming a 4-H Youth Agent, with the platform of encouraging young people to become involved in agriculture.
When asked about her thoughts after winning the title of Miss Rodeo Mississippi, Katie Jo responded, winning the title of Miss Rodeo Mississippi has been a lifelong dream, and I look forward to passing through the many doors that I know this experience is going to open for me. My love for this sport did not derive from participation or observation, but from the simple act of kindness that was shown to me by a rodeo queen when I was five years of age. Not only did she take the time to sign an autograph, but she made me feel like I was a part of something magnificent. As Miss Rodeo Mississippi 2010, I feel I am truly involved in something magnificent, and it will be my honor to give back to my community and everyone that has helped me along my lifes journey. I aspire to continue to be a positive role model for our youth, a staunch rodeo promoter, and a true American cowgirl full of the western spirit.
